I was lucky—I got my cancer at the right time.
Had I been diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell
Lymphoma 10 years ago, I would not have received the life-saving CAR-T cell therapy I did.
(Three rounds of chemo proved ineffective, so we moved on to CAR-T.)
CAR-T was FDA approved in 2017. In simplest terms, the process involved extracting my T-cells,
sending them to a lab where they genetically modified cancer-fighting cells specific to my cancer,
multiplying them, and infusing them back into my body. The new CAR-T cells found and destroyed
cancer cells in a hurry. 90 days after infusion, the huge (22cm x 10cm x 9cm) tumor in my spleen and
other hotspots throughout my lymphatic system were gone.
This is what science can do, but to me, it
feels like a miracle.
